Obituary For Ethel Kelly
Ethel H. Kelly was born on December 16th, 1919, in White Hall, South Carolina, to the proud parents, Mr. Isiah Hamilton and Mrs. Mary Manigo Hamilton. On
January 2, 1938, she married the love of her life, the late Mr. Isiah Kelly. Together, they were blessed with ten wonderful children. Ethel was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Deacon Isiah Kelly, Sr., and her sons, Albert (Phoebe) Kelly, Sr.,and Joseph (Joanne) Kelly.
Ethel will be remembered as a devoted wife, nurturing mother, loving grandmother, and great-grandmother. Beyond her dedication to her large family,
Ethel worked various jobs within her community, with her longest employment being at the Sergent Jasper Hotel in downtown Charleston, SC.
Ethel possessed an extraordinary ability to instill values of kindness, respect, and the importance of peacefully resolving conflicts. Her devotion to encouraging her children to pursue higher education made her a formidable figure, admired by all
who knew her. Her remarkable fortitude and strength of character earned her recognition from Presidents Barack Obama and Joseph “Joe” Biden.
In celebration of Ethel’s 104th birthday, the Honorable James Clyburn commemorated her extraordinary life by declaring December 16th, 2023, as "Ethel
Kelly Day"; on the floor of the U.S. House of Representative. Congressman Clyburn spoke of her unwavering faith, stating, “Ethel and Isiah raised their
children to be faithful servants of God. Guided by the Ten Commandments, Ethel’s life is an exemplary testament to their importance. Mr. Speaker, I ask that you and our colleagues join me in celebrating the remarkable life of Ethel Hamilton Kelly.
Her boundless love continues to inspire her family and those around her. "We honor her for a life well lived and extend our heartfelt wishes for her continued health and happiness.”
Ethel Kelly's life was a beacon of faith, love, and resilience. She will be deeply
missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by four sons: John W. (Lula) Kelly, Isiah (the late Sarah) Kelly, Jr., Bennie L. Kelly, and Louis Kelly; four daughters: Ethel Mae (Earnest Sr.) Bryant, Ruth M. Kelly, Dorothy L. Kelly, and Luretta (Coy, Sr) Lacy; 20 grandchildren;
28 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Rachel Goodwin, and Rebecca Smalls; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The Home Gong Service will take place on Saturday, August 31, 2024, 11:00 AM at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Wake Service will take place on Friday, August 30, 2024 at the funeral home from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
