Obituary For Exsey Bell

Ecclesiastes 3:1 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

Exsey Vydia Iris Bell was born July 31, 1953 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late James E. and Dida Mansfield Bell. The eleventh child born to the loving union. She was educated in the public schools of Charleston County.

Her desire to give care to children and the elderly led her to take private duty nursing courses at Baker Nursing School (affiliated with Baker Hospital). Utilizing her training, she cared for many children and elderly within the family and community. When her mother’s health began to fail, Exsey turned her attention to being her primary caregiver. With Exsey there, all were content to know that Mother Dear was being well cared for.

Exsey was spiritually nurtured and baptized at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. George McGuire. She enjoyed singing in the choir and served on the Usher Board. In later years, she joined Victory Missionary Baptist Church where Rev. Clary Samuels continued to lead her spiritual growth. She was a dedicated and faithful member serving on the Missionary Board as her health and caregiving would allow.

On February 24, 2025, Exsey left this earthly life for eternal glory to join her parents, three sisters (Daisy B. Brockington, Bertha B. Felder and Eva M. B. Rush) and four brothers (France Bell, James E. Bell, Jr.; Gregory T. Bell, and France Avery Bell). She leaves to cherish her memory, three sisters: Mrs. Mattie B.R. Hull, Dr. Katie B. Catalon, and Mrs. L. Carmen B. Murph (Melvin); a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret V. Bell; nieces and nephews: Mrs. Regenia C. Guest (Johnny), Dr. James E. Brockington, Jr. (CDR USN Ret. – Wanda), Ms. Dida Nesmith, Mrs. Thuane B. Fielding (Mark), Mrs. Enid B. McClam (Carlton), Mr. James E. Bell, III, Mr. Troy A. Bell (Trevis), Mr. Trojan L. Bell (Maryann), Mrs. Lindsey M. Washington (Eric), CDR Mansfield C. Murph USN, and Jasmine Bell; grandnieces and grandnephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
