Obituary For Joyce Ann Holmes - Slaughter

On June 21, 1948, God sent down an Angel for Emily S. Holmes and Marion Holmes, Sr. to dwell with them. They named her Joyce Ann. Joyce received her early education at Liberty Hill Elementary. She attended Bonds –Wilson High School until 1965 and transferred to North Charleston, High School. She became a trail blazer in the history of Civil Rights to be the first black graduate from North Charleston in 1966, the only person of color in that graduating class. Joyce continued her education and became an Executive Secretary with Verizon in New York City. After she retired, she moved back home. She received Christ as her Savior. Joyce loved the church and enjoyed ushering on Sundays. She was a loving and giving person. Joyce was married to Richard Slaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Corey Rashan. She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband; Richard Slaughter, two sisters; Gwendolyn Holmes and Audrey Heidelberg (Elvin), one brother; Marion Holmes, step children; Michelle Slaughter Guste, Christopher Elise and Emma, step grandchildren; Renee M. Dupree, Diallo Dupree, Shadelle Murray, Shadelle Murray, Alicia J. Slaughter, Gabrielle Spencer, Duane Spencer and Michelle Spencer and a host of other relatives and friends. The Home Going Service will take place on Monday, August 1, 2022, 11:00 AM at Royal Missionary Baptist Church. She will be laid to rest in Highland Memory Gardens. The Walk Thru will take place on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at the funeral home from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

    Joyce and Gwen were my only friends from home when we lived in NYC, we had some good times, I also had the pleasure of knowing her son Corey, my deepest condolences

    I met Joyce thru her brother Ivan doing their group cruises. When Ivan passed Joyce and Audrey took it over. I have never met a more loving gracious family. I mourn for your loss but she is home with her sweet mother, brother and sister. Rest in peace Joyce
