Obituary For Sallie H. Hilton
Sallie Goodwater Horry Hilton was born on Wednesday, July 26, 1939, to Thomas Elias, Jr. and Sally Goodwater Horry. Born in Hlilliardsville, now known as the Old villige of Mt. Pleasant, SC, at the corners of Pitt and Center Street, she was the third oldest child and oldest daughter of six children.
As a child, Sallie was often quiet and loved to read books. When she wasn't reading, she enjoyed playing with her two sisters, grass dolls, and dancing. She was known to be a fierce protector of her siblings, quick to step up to their defense. Sallie was also her grandfather's favorite, and she loved the early morning row boat rides along the Mt. Pleasant shoreline that her grandfather would take her and her siblings on.
At a young age, Sallie committed her life to Christ, becoming a full member of Friendship AME Church, Class #16, in 1955. Sallie attended Laing High School, graduating in 1957. While at Laing, she was active in school and served as the Circulation Manager for the Laing Spectator (school newspaper) and as a member of the Y-Teen group through the YWCA. She enjoyed writing and helped others to be good leaders.
Upon graduation from Laing School, Sallie attended Friendship Junior College in Rockill, SC. She later graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, SC, with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
Sallie utilized her education degree across many towns and taught at several schools in South Carolina, including Howard High School in Georgetown, Lincoln High School in McClellanville, and her alma mater, Laing High School, where she taught business education until Laing HS closed in 1970. Thereafter, Sallie started her civil service career at the Naval Weapons Station for many years, followed by her administrative role at ther Charleston Naval Shipyard, where she worked in the vault.
Sallie continued to fill her time as an active leader and servant in the church, her community, and in her kitchen, where she loved to bake. She was well known for her carrot cakes, key lime pie, and Chinese Chew desserts. Sallie had dreams of becoming a children's book author and, during the 1980s, began to write stories and work with The Institute of Children's Literature located in Redding Ridge, Connecticut. Her first story was titled "The Disappearing Blueberry Pie." Sallie passionately prioritized her roles dedicated to Christian service. As amember ol Friendship AME Church, Sallie served on the Steward Board, as Class Leader of Class 8, as Class Treasurer sang in the Senior Choir, and worked with the Horry- Bennett Women's Missionary Socicty
As a Missionary within the Women's Missionary Socicty, she served as President twice, Recording Secretary, and Promotion Missionary Education (PME) Director on the local level. On the area level she served as Assistant Recording Secretary, Recording Secretary Treasurer, and First Vice President.
Sallie also served as an active member of several other organizations, including Grace Tent #6, as Junior Matron and Financial Secretary. She also worked with Royal Degree Chamber #13, Household of Ruth #2906, and as a Guardian for the Juvenile Israelites #187.
Staying active in her later years, Sallic also worked with the Laing Alumni Association serving with the late Mr. William Rouse, who founded the organization After Mr. Rousc's passing. she served as the President of the Laing Alumni Association until the group disbanded.
Sallie continued as an active servant of her community in other roles including the United Benevolent Sisterhood Society, where she held the position of President, Additionally, Sallie voluntecred with the local chapter of the Amcrican Red Cross and the Mt. Pleasant Manor Nursing Home.
Early on, Sallie married Gerald Edison Ligon for a short time, having one son, Gerald Henry Ligon. In 1971, she fell in love and married James Earl Hilton. Together;, they built a family and raised three children: Gerald Henry, James Everette, and Monica Lyn. Sallie went on to cherish her role as a loving wife, dedicated mother and honored grandmother and great-grandmother.
Sallie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Sally Horry; her infant daughter Carol Adrian:; two brothers, Thomas Elias Horry I1, and Robert Chester Horry; and her nephew, Thomas Elias IV.
Her memory will be treasured by her most devoted husband of 54 years, James Earl; her children, Gerald Henry (Kimberly) and James Everette (Tamara), and her most dedicated daughter, Dr. Monica Lyn; grandchildren Robert J.N. (Tawanah), Gerald T.D. (Lillian). Matthew E.A., Jalen Christopher, James Cameryn, Jadyn Alexis, and Maurice Elijah; great- grandchildren: Marceline A. Brandt, Kalen and Cascy Hilton; siblings, Henry G. Horry (Late Beulah), Vera L. Horry, and Jacquelin H, Richardson (Rev, Benjamin L.): in-laws, Rev William Frederick Hilton, Welborn Hilton (Shannon), Barbara H. Hitch (Gerald), Alphonso Hilton (Bertha), and Gene Hilton (ate Charles), and a host of nicces nephews, cousins, and friends.
