Obituary For Arthur Barnwell, Sr.
Arthur Barnwell, Sr. was born April 3, 1945, in Ashleyville, South Carolina to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Barnwell.
As the second oldest of seven (7) siblings, Arthur played football for two years at Wallace High school and graduated in 1965. Upon graduation, Arthur served in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant with the Launcher Crewman Artillery Missile BN on June 19, 1968.
Arthur married the love of his life, Katherine G. Barnwell, on August 8, 1970, and from that union, they have two children, Charleen Melissa and Arthur, Jr.
On November 20, 1970, Arthur was certified as an Electronics Technician from the United Electronics Institute. He worked for Xerox Corporation until he retired after 37 years of service where he was known as a “Xerox Customer Hero” for his dedication and ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction and loyalty. Although not required, Arthur would wear a tie to work every day as a sign of professionalism.
On January 13, 1974, Arthur was baptized and united in faith with the Jacksonville Road, Church of Christ, in North Charleston, South Carolina. In recent years, Arthur was active in the Prison and Visitation Ministries at the Metropolitan Church of Christ.
Arthur’s interests and achievements included Karate where he obtained a Brown Belt and numerous bowling accolades including a Brunswick Award for bowling a 300 game and an American Bowling Conference (ABC) ring. During retirement, Arthur loved the game of tennis and committed himself to tennis lessons and lifting weights.
Arthurs loved his family, had an infectious laugh and was always ready to do the Electric Slide at a family event. Everyone who encountered Arthur was drawn to his BIG smile, always willing to lend a helping hand.
Arthur leaves to cherish his loving memories, a devoted wife, Katherine G. Barnwell. Proud father of two children, Charleen Melissa Barnwell and Arthur (Agnes) Barnwell, Jr and five grandchildren, Stephone Bartholomew Johnson, II, Stephen Bradley Johnson, Agnes E. Barnwell, Alana Barnwell, and Arthur Barnwell III; four sisters, JoeAnn B. (the late Walter) Grant, Jacqueline (Bernard) Rivers, Sr. Rev. Dr. Mary L. Jordan, and Doris Frost (Larry), sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilhemenia (Benny) Ladson, Louise G. (the late McKeever) Brown, Carolyn (the late Thomas) Coaxum, Isaac (Irene) Gethers, Jr. aunts and uncles, Clyde (Mildred) Green, Alexander (Josephine) Green, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.
In addition to his parents, his sister, Lavinia (Odessa) Barnwell; his brother, Joseph (Abdullah) Barnwell, preceded him in death.
The Home Going Service will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024,12:00 noon at The Johns Island Church of Christ 2850 Murraywood Rd. Johns Island, SC. He will be entombed at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Walk Thru will take place on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the funeral home from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
