Obituary For Capers Johnson

In Loving Memory of Capers Johnson

Capers "Johnny" Johnson, a beloved husband to Sandra Johnson for 52 years and a cherished father to Bernice Washington (Malcolm), Leona Jackson (Jamar), Tamar Adams(Cornell), Tamika Johnson, and Capers S. Johnson (Jessica), passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023. He was a loving patriarch, survived by 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who are left to mourn his passing.

Born in Walterboro, South Carolina, Capers ventured to New York City at the age of 19, embarking on a path that would lead to a distinguished 27-year career as a law enforcement officer in the state of New York; also becoming a part of the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) during his tenure. He dedicated most of his career to serving at Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, NY, retiring in 1997.

Capers' devotion extended beyond his career; he was a man deeply rooted in his faith in Jesus and community. After retirement, he relocated his family to North Charleston, SC, where he became an integral member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Here, he initiated the Special Needs and Security ministries, embodying his caring and protective nature. Capers also selflessly served on the Treasury board and Jubilee Choir - leaving a lasting impact on all those he encountered.

In addition to his loving wife and children, Capers is remembered by his siblings Eddie Lee Johnson (Doris), Furman Johnson, and Anna Liza Johnson Jones. He was preceded by his beloved siblings Leatrice Johnson, Minnie-Mae Miller, Edgar Johnson, and Wilhelmina Johnson Williams.

Though born to Edgar Johnson and Lena Johnson, he was lovingly adopted by Rosella Walker at the age of 9, creating a lifelong bond with Veronica Moultrie. Capers' love knew no bounds and was felt by everyone blessed enough to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service to the Lord and his family. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
