Obituary For Mack Drayton, Jr.
Mack Drayton. Jr., son of Mack Drayton, Sr. and Emma Drayton, was born on January 29th, 1945, in Charleston, SC. Mack graduated from Burke High School in 1964. He was the captain of the football & baseball team and performed in the band. He attended South Carolina State University (SCSU) in Orangeburg, South Carolina on a full athletic scholarship for football and baseball. He excelled in both sports. Upon completion of his freshman year, beginning of his sophomore year, Mack was drafted into the US Army where he also excelled in football and baseball for 2 years.
Upon completion of his military obligation, he returned to SCSU to pursue his education and complete his full athletic scholarship. This is when he met his beautiful wife, Ida Mae Whitten the summer of 1969 during summer school. That same year, he was united in Holy matrimony on December 23rd, 1969. Mack was blessed with two daughters, Rashida and Shayna.
Mack was employed by Charleston County School District (CCSD) system. He worked as a driver education instructor, athletic director, and coach. After receiving his B.S. in Health and Physical Education 1970 at SCSU, Mack earned a master’s in education from Citadel Military College in 1980.
He was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in Charleston, SC. Thereafter, Mack started Mack Drayton Drivers Training School, Inc. in 1981. This school lasted until September 30th, 2022. With the assistance of Ida (wife) and his daughters, the business flourished for 30+ years.
Mack loved football and baseball. He greatly enjoyed working with the youth. Mack also enjoyed working in the yard and always boasted about his beautiful daughters. He always told everyone about how “smart, talented and athletic” his daughters are. Along with Ida and the girls, Mack enjoyed attending a various number of performances and activities.
Mack cherished memories with his daughters - Rashida Hemmans (Kareem) - Charlotte, NC & Shayna Drayton - Tallahassee, FL; Siblings - Stella Dukes (James) Ladson, SC; Earline McQueen - Summerville, SC; Louise Richardson Gibson (Malachi) - Charleston, SC; John Smalls (Sharon) - San Diego, CA; Earl Burgess (St Stephen’s); and Brenda Burgess (North Charleston). Granddaughters- Madelyn and Shakilah. Sisters in-law: Liticia Whitten - Charleston, SC & Sherry Gilliam (Andrew) - Charleston, SC. Long time friends- Walter Mitchell, Robert Riley, Dr. Reinhart Brown, Earl Brown, Sr., George Pettigrew and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mack had brothers and sisters who preceded him in death, including his special sister Thelma ‘T.C.’ Drayton.
The Home going Service will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2024, 12:00 noon at The Johns Island Church of Christ, 2850 Murraywood Rd. Johns Island, SC. The Wake Service will take place on Friday, November 1, 2024 at the church from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The Omega Psi Phi Omega Service will begin promptly at 6:30 PM.
