Obituary For Rev. Dr. Runell Laverne Washington

Reverend Doctor Runell LaVerne Washington, passed away peacefully in Charleston, South Carolina on June 4, 2025.

Runell, affectionally known to many, as LaVerne, was born on August 15, 1955, to Annabelle and Benjamin William Steed, in Charleston, South Carolina.

LaVerne was educated in the public schools of Charleston County. In 1974, Runell LaVerne Steed, enlisted in the United States Army to serve and protect her country and worked as an Air Traffic Controller.

On November 12th, 1994, Runell married the love of her life, Reverend Bernard Robert Washington, Jr. This marriage continued for 31 years, “until death due them part”.

LaVerne furthered her education at John Wesley College where she graduated with honors, and achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Counseling. She dedicated her life to a distinguished career in psychology and ministry. LaVerne’s passion to serve and make a difference in the lives of others is highlighted in her exceptional contributions to the field of Christian Counseling and the study of God’s Word. This includes her work at the Malachi House in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she provided hope and support for individuals struggling with substance abuse. She also worked as a Shelter Manager and Counselor at The Union Mission Ministry in Norfolk, Virginia.

At the heart of her Ministry, Laverne created a platform to educate and minister the Word of God to those in need. In 2001, after preaching a revival at Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, LaVerne and Bernard were inspired by the Holy Spirt to give birth to the Washed Lives Bible Line Ministry. Dr. LaVern Washington remained dedicated to the Bible Line Ministry daily (Monday - Friday) for over 23 years; until God called her home for her reward. In 2006, Runell along with her husband Bernard opened Destiny House; a home for men struggling with substance abuse.

LaVerne began her theological journey in 1994 at the International Seminary School of Theology, where she received a diploma in Advanced Theological Studies. She later further her theological studies by attending Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Laverne was dedicated to everything she did! She graduated with honors from Regent University and earned both a Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology and a Doctorate of Psychology Degree. While enrolled at Regent, Runell traveled on her missionary journey to Johannesburg, South Africa, Nicaragua, Romania and Haiti carrying the Word of God and praying for everyone in need.

LaVerne served both national and international communities. As a result of her passion for others and her love for God and His Word, LaVerne established Washed Lives Ministry in India and Romania. Runell's profound contributions to psychology and ministry will have a lasting impact on countless lives, earning her deep respect from colleagues and peers alike.

LaVerne's dedication to helping others was evident through her years of service, notable positions, and numerous awards. She was passionate about advancing the understanding of mental health and supporting individuals on their journey to recovery. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

LaVerne was a gifted singer; She loved singing for the glory of God. One of her favorite songs was “Walk Around Heaven All Day”.

Rev. Dr. Runell Laverne Washington was preceded in death by her beloved parents Annabell Knox and Benjamin William Steed, her only son Dimitrius Steed and her brother Alonza Simmons.

She leaves precious memories of her to her husband Reverend Bernard R. Washington, Jr., her sister, Mrs. Denise Steed Matthews (Tony) of Charleston, SC, two half siblings; Earthalee Washington and Nathaniel Keith both of Charleston, SC, two stepchildren Ms. Kenisha Jones, and Vonzell Jones, both of Charleston, SC, three grandnieces she nurtured and helped to raise; Kea, Veronica and LaToya Simmons, six nieces, one nephew, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Runell deeply loved her family and friends. Her wish would be that as family we understand that “Families are like branches on a tree. We grow in different directions, yet our roots remain one”. Remember to love one another.
