Obituary For St. Julian Van Hannegeyn
St. Julian Van Hannegeyn III was born August 27,1944 to the late St. Julian Van Hannegeyn Jr and the late Wilhemenia Edwards Van Hannegeyn of Charleston, South Carolina; he was the fourth of eight children. St. Julian was affectionately known as “Sun Junior”, “Junior”, “Junior Mason” and “Van”. St. Julian was educated in the Charleston County public schools and graduated from Bonds Wilson High School in 1963. In February of 1964 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he faithfully served our country for five years. During his tenure in the military, he trained at Paris Island and received advanced training at Camp Geiger in North Carolina. He served two tours in the Vietnam war, first in 1966 and then in 1968. Because of his injury in his second tour, he was awarded the The Purple Heart. His other military awards include: Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He was Honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant (SSGT) in April of 1969. Shortly after his tenure in the military, he met the love of his life, L. Annette Van Hannegeyn. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on November 24, 1974. They were blessed with four children, Sean, St. Julian Corey IV, Junelle and Jermaine. After the military, St. Julian started his career with the Goer Manufacturing Co, and transitioned to several other companies to include: Piggly Wiggly Warehouse, SC State Ports Authority, Cummings Engine Co, Charleston Naval shipyard, where he served 25 years, and the City of North Charleston. St. Julian was a serial entrepreneur and owned a consignment shop and two restaurants, Rosas kitchen and Teens Grill n Takeout. St. Julian accepted Christ Jesus as his savior at an early age at Oak Grove Baptist church and later joined Abyssinia Baptist Church where he served as chairman and treasurer of the Trustee Board, was a member of the choir and served as their acting secretary. He was also a member of the Prayer Band and participated with the Cooper River Baptist Association many years ago. St Julian had a passion for taking care of his family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending church. In his spear time, he loved crabbing, fishing, and deer hunting. God called St Julian Van Hannegeyn home on May 18, 2023 surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Elizabeth Edwards, Annette Edwards Lewis and James Michael Edwards. Left to enjoy many wonderful memories of Saint Julian Van Hannegeyn III are: his devoted wife for 48 years, L. Annette Generette Van Hannegeyn; his children, Sean M. Van Hannegeyn (Kesha), Mt. Pleasant SC, St. Julian Corey Van Hannegeyn IV, N Chas, SC, Junelle N. Van Hannegeyn N Chas SC and Jermaine L. Van Hannegeyn, Hollywood FL; his siblings, WillaMae Mason Pearson, N Chas SC, Sarah Mason Mikkelson (Dale), Moncks Corner, SC George Van Hannegeyn (late Arthuree) N Chas, SC Henry Mason, N Chas SC; two sister in laws, Henrietta Edwards, Mt. Holly SC and Deetra Frost, N Chas SC; and grandchildren, Darius T. Van Hannegeyn, Casey King, Jocelyn N. Van Hannegeyn, Tyler C. Van Hannegeyn and Kendall Simmons. The Home Going Service will take place on Saturday, June 3, 2023, 11:00 AM at Life Center Cathedral 7190 Cross County Rd. N. Charleston, SC. He will be laid to rest in Carolina Memorial Gardens. The Wake Service will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023 at Abyssinia Baptist Church, 4656 Nesbit Ave., N. Charleston, SC.
